XML Representation Format For Axiom

Minimal And Dangerous

This example is the very minimal XML file. It assumes that the processor knows the namespace of the model, model version is irrelevant (latest) and so on.

<user>
    <givenName>John</givenName>
    <familyName>Doe</familyName>
    <path>user/myIdentifier</path>
    <activation>
        <administrativeStatus>enabled</administrativeStatus>
    </activation>
    <myIdentifier>123</myIdentifier>
    <employmentStatus>full</employmentStatus>
</user>

There is considerable risk taken by avoiding all namespaces and prefixes. E.g. myIdentifier and employmentStatus are items introduced by augmentation and they belong to custom namespace. However, there is no indication of namespaces here, therefore there is a danger of naming conflict.

Comfortable And Safe

This is an example of XML file with reasonable identification of the model.

<user _version="4.4"
        xmlns="https://schema.evolveum.com/midpoint/common"
        xmlns:example-custom="https://schema.example.com/custom">
    <givenName>John</givenName>
    <familyName>Doe</familyName>
    <path>user/example-custom:myIdentifier</path>
    <activation>
        <administrativeStatus>enabled</administrativeStatus>
    </activation>
    <example-custom:myIdentifier>123</example-custom:myIdentifier>
    <example-custom:employmentStatus>full</example-custom:employmentStatus>
</user>

This example is unambiguous, the data are written in reliable way, there are no naming conflicts. Primary model and version is precisely identified, including model version. However, the custom augmentation model is identified only by namespace, the version is not indicated.

TODO: how to specify model version? Is that _version OK?

Undeclared Prefixes

Use of XML prefixes without a need to declare them. Mapping of prefixes to namespace URLs is taken from model definitions. Model namespace and version is assumed.

<user>
    <givenName>John</givenName>
    <familyName>Doe</familyName>
    <path>user/example-custom:myIdentifier</path>
    <activation>
        <administrativeStatus>enabled</administrativeStatus>
    </activation>
    <example-custom:myIdentifier>123</example-custom:myIdentifier>
    <example-custom:employmentStatus>full</example-custom:employmentStatus>
</user>

This is a terse format suitable for example for database storage. Model namespace could be hardcoded, model version is likely to be same for the entire database, therefore it can stored in one place. We still want to use prefixes to be able to reliably distinguish augmentations. But we want to avoid repetitive declaration of the prefixes.

Full Regalia

This is an example of XML with complete and strict data about model, strict namespace declarations and so on.

<midpoint:user axiom-model:version="4.4"
        xmlns:midpoint="https://schema.evolveum.com/midpoint/common"
        xmlns:axiom-model="https://schema.evolveum.com/axiom/model"
        xmlns:example-custom="https://schema.example.com/custom">
    <midpoint:givenName>John</midpoint:givenName>
    <midpoint:familyName>Doe</midpoint:familyName>
    <midpoint:path>midpoint:user/example-custom:myIdentifier</midpoint:path>
    <midpoint:activation>
        <midpoint:administrativeStatus>enabled</midpoint:administrativeStatus>
    </midpoint:activation>
    <example-custom:myIdentifier>123</example-custom:myIdentifier>
    <example-custom:employmentStatus>full</example-custom:employmentStatus>
</user>

TODO: how to identify custom model version? example-custom:version=""?

Or this:

<midpoint:user axiom-model:version="4.4"
        xmlns:midpoint="https://schema.evolveum.com/midpoint/common"
        xmlns:axiom-model="https://schema.evolveum.com/axiom/model"
        xmlns:example-custom="https://schema.example.com/custom">
    <axiom-model:modelReference>
        <axiom-model:namespace>https://schema.example.com/custom</axiom-model:namespace>
        <axiom-model:version>1.0</axiom-model:version>
    </axiom-model:modelReference>
    <midpoint:givenName>John</midpoint:givenName>
    <midpoint:familyName>Doe</midpoint:familyName>
    <midpoint:path>midpoint:user/example-custom:myIdentifier</midpoint:path>
    <midpoint:activation>
        <midpoint:administrativeStatus>enabled</midpoint:administrativeStatus>
    </midpoint:activation>
    <example-custom:myIdentifier>123</example-custom:myIdentifier>
    <example-custom:employmentStatus>full</example-custom:employmentStatus>
</user>

Compatibility

This is an example of format variation that were used in the past, but we still want to be able to parse them.

There is an old namespace for the midpoint model, which is configured as an namespace alias for the model.

Extension Element

Augmentation items are placed in dedicated extension element. This element is explicitly specified in the midpoint or prism object definition to be used for compatibility purposes.

<user
        xmlns="http://midpoint.evolveum.com/xml/ns/public/common/common-3"
        xmlns:example-custom="https://schema.example.com/custom">
    <givenName>John</givenName>
    <familyName>Doe</familyName>
    <path>user/example-custom:myIdentifier</path>
    <activation>
        <administrativeStatus>enabled</administrativeStatus>
    </activation>
    <extension>
        <example-custom:myIdentifier>123</example-custom:myIdentifier>
        <example-custom:employmentStatus>full</example-custom:employmentStatus>
    </extension>
</user>

Even though there is additional element extension, the item path is still expressed without that element. E.g the path for employmentStatus should be:

example-custom:employmentStatus

Axiom data processors can still accept paths with extension element for compatibility reasons, such as:

extension/example-custom:employmentStatus

However, such path is not considered to be canonical. The path should be transformed to a form without the extension element whenever possible.

Metadata, Underscore Notation

Metadata for simple string item (givenName) and for structured item (actiavtion).

This example is using the underscore notation to indicate transition to inframodel.

<user
        xmlns="https://schema.evolveum.com/midpoint/common"
        xmlns:example-custom="https://schema.example.com/custom">
    <givenName>
        <_value>John</_value>
        <_metadata>
            <storage>
                <creation>
                    <timestamp>2020-06-12T18:14:05Z</timestamp>
                </creation>
            </storage>
            <example-custom:verification>
                <level>verified</level>
                <verifier>jack</verifier>
            </example-custom:verification>
        </_metadata>
    </givenName>
    <activation>
        <_value>
            <administrativeStatus>
                <_value>enabled</_value>
                <_metadata>
                    <storage>...</storage>
                </_metadata>
            </administrativeStatus>
        </_value>
        <_metadata>
            <storage>...</storage>
        </_metadata>
    </activation>
</user>

Storage metadata are specified in midPoint model, therefore storage item does not need to be namespace-qualified.

This example also assumes that child elements do not need to be namespace-qualified. Alternative notation of verification metadata could be:

            ...
            <example-custom:verification>
                <example-custom:level>verified</example-custom:level>
                <example-custom:verifier>jack</example-custom:verifier>
            </example-custom:verification>
            ...

Yet another alternative is to omit namespaces entirely. This can work as long as verification metadata item is unique in the schema. However, this notation is not "future-proof".

            ...
            <verification>
                <level>verified</level>
                <verifier>jack</verifier>
            </verification>
            ...

Metadata, Namespace Notation

Metadata for simple string item (givenName) and for structured item (actiavtion).

This example is using explicit namespace qualification to indicate transition to inframodel.

<user
        xmlns="https://schema.evolveum.com/midpoint/common"
        xmlns:axiom-data="https://schema.evolveum.com/axiom/data"
        xmlns:example-custom="https://schema.example.com/custom">
    <givenName>
        <axiom-data:value>John</axiom-data:value>
        <axiom-data:metadata>
            <storage>
                <creation>
                    <timestamp>2020-06-12T18:14:05Z</timestamp>
                </creation>
            </storage>
            <example-custom:verification>
                <level>verified</level>
                <verifier>jack</verifier>
            </example-custom:verification>
        </axiom-data:metadata>
    </givenName>
    <activation>
        <axiom-data:value>
            <administrativeStatus>
                <axiom-data:value>enabled</axiom-data:value>
                <axiom-data:metadata>
                    <storage>...</storage>
                </axiom-data:metadata>
            </administrativeStatus>
        </axiom-data:value>
        <axiom-data:metadata>
            <storage>...</storage>
        </axiom-data:metadata>
    </activation>
</user>

Storage metadata are specified in midPoint model, therefore storage item does not need to be namespace-qualified.
